Jeremy, I (Fr. Will), and fifteen CMU students traveled to Washington D.C. this past Thursday for the annual March For Life to the Supreme Court, to protest legalized killing of innocent humans. A major part of our commitment to the protection of human life stems from the fact that every human life is created with a sacred dignity that cannot be disposed of because some law. Some laws are just wrong.
Our stand as Catholics stems from scientific fact. All people of goodwill agree that human life is good and that innocent human life should be protected. Those who support legalized abortion focus on the difficult situations that some women experience because of their pregnancy. Abortion is seen as the only option to help the situation. This way of reasoning ignores the fact that destroying innocent life simply because it is inconvenient destroys the human dignity. Any reasonable person knows that human life begins at conception. We did not begin at birth; we began about nine months before our birth. While proponents of abortion shift the focus to the situation, Catholics focus on the reality: human life begins at conception. While experts might debate when “ensoulment” happens, i.e., when a human life receives an immortal soul, this has no bearing on the fact when human life begins. The Church has not affirmed specifically when ensoulment happens. The Church has affirmed that all human life is sacred from conception to death; and regardless of ensoulment, we need to treat all human life with dignity.
Whenever we make tough decisions out of respect for life, God will bless us abundantly. He never penalizes us for sacrificing for the good of another. Amazing blessings come to those who sacrifice for the truth, for what is right and good, for the little ones. Jesus shows us the way to life by sacrifice, which brings about new life.
An excellent way to be pro life is to affirm the beauty of God’s plan for human sexuality. God blesses abundantly the union of husband and wife. When this union is separated from marriage, truth and beauty are sacrificed for selfishness. Learning and living the full meaning of God’s plan for sex and marriage makes us witnesses to the Gospel of life. Let us be informed and generous witnesses of this Gospel.
